Should I use a licensed contractor to install my elevator?

This is a very common question asked by a lot of our clients. The California State Contractors License Board requires any individual or entity doing work over the amount of $500.00, must be licensed.

The following is an excerpt directly for the State License Boards website. Visit the State License Board site directly for further information - Do Your Home-Improvement Homework

Selecting a Licensed Contractor

What Kind Do You Need?

There are 42 different types of contractor licenses, including general and specialty contractors. General building contractors usually oversee projects and coordinate the specific subcontractors for a job. Specialty or subcontractors usually are hired to perform a single job. For example, if you want only roofing or plumbing work, you may want to hire a contractor licensed in that particular specialty. A general building contractor may also contract for specialty work, but must hold a specialty license for that work or actually have a specialty contractor do the work. If the job requires more than two types of work on a building, then it is appropriate for a licensed general building contractor to contract for and oversee the entire project. For example, if your kitchen remodeling will involve the performance of plumbing, electrical and carpentry work under one contract, a licensed general building contractor should be hired.

Under those circumstances, a general building contractor may perform all of the work on a building, or have specialty subcontractors do all or part of the scope of work for which they are licensed.

One of the best ways to select a licensed contractor is to seek out personal recommendations from friends or relatives who recently had work of the type you want completed.

If the work you are considering is valued at $500 or more, a valid California Contractor's License is required for the license category in which the contractor is to work. If you contract with someone who does not have a license, the Contractors Board may not be able to assist you with a resolution to a complaint, and a remedy against an unlicensed contractor may be available only in civil court. This is one more good reason to work only with licensed contractors!

Check the Contractor's License

Is the contractor properly licensed? In California, any job that costs $500 or more for material and labor must be performed by a contractor who holds a current, valid license from the Contractors State License Board in the specialty for which he or she is contracting.

Ask to see the contractor's pocket license and some additional form of identification. The name on the pocket license should be the same as the name of the contractor or business name under which the contractor is working.

It is illegal for one contractor to use another contractor's license, just as it is illegal for someone to use another's driver's license.

When you establish that the contractor's or company's name matches what appears on the pocket license issued by the Contractors State License Board, call the Board's toll-free number, (800) 321-CSLB, or check the www.cslb.ca.gov website to find out if the license is valid.

Finally, if the contractor is operating with a valid license, you may also want to find out whether the person is a member of a professional or trade association that has a code of ethics or standards for its trade. You may want to contact the local chapter of the association to see whether it will act as an intermediary in case of disputes, or arrange for an impartial arbitrator. If you want an arbitration clause in your contract, make sure the contractor you are considering will agree to arbitrate any disputes that arise out of the contract.

What is a stairway lift and how does it work?

A stairway lift is a motorized chair on a track that is secured to your staircase with a few sturdy screws. With an Access Industries lift provided by Abbey Home Elevator, there are no structural changes made to your home and the lift glides along stairs without marring walls. With a push of a button, you are gently and securely carried over stairs. When not in use, the lift folds compactly against the wall. At Abbey Home Elevator, your comfort and safety are our top priority. That’s why all of our stairway lifts include a seat that swivels away from the stair, providing a safe and comfortable way to get on and off the lift. Our lifts are designed to ensure a smooth, comfortable ride that will let you confidently maintain your lifestyle and freely enjoy your whole house.

How much space does it use?

When not in use, the seat and footrest can be folded up, maximizing space on the stairway for others. It typically takes up about 14” when folded. When in use, it typically opens to about 25.”

Will the stairway lift work for someone who also uses a wheelchair?

Access lifts can be useful even for someone who has limited mobility. Convenience features built into some models include folding arms that push up and out of the way, adjustable seat heights, and soft, padded seats.

How will it look in my house?

Abbey Home Elevator offers the widest variety of colors and fabrics to choose from – so you’re sure to find a look that blends with your décor. Upholstery options include easy-care vinyl and plush fabrics. Or, on select models, you may choose to send in some of your own fabric for a truly customized look that will perfectly match your current furnishings.

What about safety features?

All of Abbey Home Elevator and Access Industries’ stairway lifts are engineered with multiple safety features for your peace of mind. Our multi-point safety system includes sensors that stop the lift if something blocks its path, a seatbelt for added security, and brakes that will stop the lift should something go wrong with the drive system. The swivel seats ensure an easier, safer transition from sitting to standing positions. And, the swivel seat locks your seat in place when it’s swiveled away from the landing and ensure the seat swivels only at a landing and not during the ride. Add mechanisms that prevent the unit from traveling beyond the track, and you’ll see a commitment to quality that ensures nothing will prevent a smooth ride. Even the controls are designed with your comfort in mind. Constant pressure controls make sure the lift will stop if you release your finger from the controls.

Is it easy to care for?

Yes! Stair-Glide® stairway lifts are easy to maintain and designed to last for years. In fact, we back each one with the best guarantee in the business – a full five-year drive train and two-year parts warranty. That’s years longer than the industry average! It says something about our commitment to quality and your peace of mind. We recommend a preventive maintenance check every six months by our factory certified service personnel.

Why include an elevator?

It wasn't that long ago that it was rare to find a whirlpool bathtub in a house...now it's not uncommon to find a home elevator in the plans of single-family homes and condominiums. Over 10,000 residential elevators are installed each year and the number is growing as more builders and buyers discover their many advantages:

Convenience
Efficient use of land
The trend toward larger homes with more amenities
Today's homes are larger and require more effort to go from one level to another. Multi-story homes and townhomes are more enjoyable with a residential elevator to provide convenient floor-to-floor travel. Access Industries manufactures a wide range of home elevators to meet the needs of all sorts of residences.

Surprisingly Affordable
The cost for a residential elevator is also lower than many people think...costing no more than an extra guest room or third car garage in many cases.

Uncommon Convenience
There are few conveniences that can be added to a home that will be used and appreciated as much as a residential elevator.

An elevator can be elegantly appointed and featured as a dramatic focal point in a key part of the house.
For people who entertain, it welcomes and accommodates all guests.
It can add tremendous value to a home and increase a homes resale value.
Getting Started
Including an elevator in your home is a very simple process when you plan it out step by step. It's not much different than planning for a whirlpool bath, sprinkler system or other major home appliance.

How easy is it?
1. Select the elevator model that is right for your dream home.
2. Build the hoist way according to the specifications provided by Access Industries.
3. Contact your local Access Industries factory-trained elevator contractor to do the actual installation of the working unit.

Is a home elevator safe?

The answer is 'yes,' when used properly. The elevator when installed by Abbey Home Elevator has several safety devices.

Doors - all landing doors are mechanically locked and only can be opened when the elevator is at that floor. The door can not be opened while the elevator is traveling between floors.

Power failure - the elevator is equipped with a battery operated safety feature which returns the elevator to the designated floor. Emergency lighting comes on to illuminate the cab interior.

Do home elevators have an acme screw drive like a wheelchair lift?

No. The three most common drive systems in a home elevator are the counterweight drive system, the hydraulic drive and the winding drum drive. The wheelchair lift uses the basic acme screw drive.

How much is a residential elevator?

What are home elevator prices? What is the price of a home elevator? How much does a residential elevator cost? Who sells home elevators?

These are one of the first questions people ask a home elevator company. It is not uncommon or quite frankly an unreasonable question. Most people have limited experience with elevators and tend to think about the elevator they rode at the university, hospital or big commercial building they were in last week. If that is your last or only experience with elevators, it is no wonder you think they are so expensive only the "rich & famous" can afford them.

While you can spend a significant exorbitant amount of money on customizing your home elevator with marble floors, beveled mirrors, fancy paintings and the latest in technology - an integrated LCD screen mounted in the wall of your elevator cab, most people don't. The average price of a home elevator is about what you would expect to pay for a basic kitchen remodel.

When faced with the question of if I can’t get upstairs I may have to sell the house, a home elevator becomes a very cost effective solution.

As a matter of fact, one of the leading home elevator manufacturers made an elevator called the LEV™. The whole concept around the LEV elevator is how to create the everyday home elevator that will work in the house next door. The house next door could be your average entry level track home or the magnificent estate mansion designed with lavish details. If you have more than one level and want to get up stairs, a home elevator could be the answer for your home.

If you would like to have a elevator sales consultant meet with you or your architect and builder, contact Abbey Home Elevator @ 800-842-2239. We will provide a complete analysis of your home to find the best location for the retro-fit of your new elevator. If you are in the design phase, we can provide electrical schematics, framing specifications, and complete hoist way layout to make integrating a home elevator into your new home a quick, painless and enjoyable experience.

Abbey Home Elevator is looking forward to assisting with the sales, service and installation of your new home elevator. Abbey Home Elevator - … helping build the lifestyle you deserve. ™
