ASME PART 18: The New Wheelchair Lift Code - and what it means to you
If you are a designer or building owner, recent changes to the ASME Part 18 building code can have significant impact on your specifications or purchase decisions. How? Vertical wheelchair lifts can now penetrate floors.
Maximum travel any vertical lift manufacturer provides is 14 ft., therefore ASME Part 18 code changes apply to two-story buildings only. With second-story access a requirement for all buildings in California, vertical platform lifts have always been a viable option. However, placement of the hoistway so that it would not penetrate a floor was always a challenge. Now, vertical platform lifts can be installed anywhere you are considering a commercial elevator - at a fraction of the price. Another advantage of vertical lift installation over commercial elevators is reduced monthly maintenance costs. Under a semi-annual service contract, vertical lifts do not have to be inspected by the state every year. This means considerable savings compared to monthly elevator maintenance, and the guarantee that your lift is always working safely.
A fire-rated floor between stories determines whether the lift requires installation in a fire-rated hoistway with fire-rated doors. Otherwise, a vertical lift in it's own Plexiglas and steel/aluminum enclosure is the perfect solution.
